What does a new Sonic game need?

What does a new Sonic game need?

Ever since a new Sonic The Hedgehog game was announced I started thinking ‘What does a new Sonic game need?’. Then, I immediately grabbed my pen and start working on a list that after a couple minutes of writing was bigger than I’d like it to be. So, I trimmed it down and got rid of all reductant points and ended up with just 6 topics! It might not be much but I really hope I see some of them being implemented!

So, here they are!

1. NO MORE 2D SEGMENTS

While playing the latest modern Sonic games these were the parts I enjoyed the least, especially in Sonic Forces where platforming with any character was a struggle. The controls weren’t precise and that resulted in a very frustrating experience. I really hope they focus on refining the 3D segments because those, despite also having their flaws, were always way more enjoyable to play.

2. THE MUSIC

In my opinion Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 had the most memorable soundtracks of any Sonic game especially the songs performed by Crush 40. The lyrics might be corny sometimes but they are memorable and part of the identity of Modern Sonic. So, I really hope we get more of Crush 40 in the future of this franchise.

3. MORE PLAYABLE CHARACTERS

The Sonic The Hedgehog franchise has a large roster of characters and it’s a shame that in the latest games we were forced to play with mostly Sonic. I know he’s the protagonist but having more characters to play as means having more original levels that don’t focus just on speed!

4. LEAVE CLASSIC SONIC IN MANIA

Sonic Generations was fun but if you’re putting Classic Sonic in every game from now on it just means that Modern Sonic can’t stand on its own anymore, which isn’t true! So, please, leave Classic Sonic in Mania!

5. WORTHWHILE COLLECTABLES

Let’s be honest, in Sonic Forces the Red Rings, Numbers Rings, and Moon Rings were a complete disappointment. The Red Rings did unlock some Extra Stages but since most of them involved 2D platforming they were terrible. What happened to collect the Chaos Emeralds and unlocking Super Sonic? Isn’t that enjoyable anymore?

6. CHAO GARDEN NEEDS TO COME BACK

How many hours have I spent raising Chao in Sonic Adventure 1&2? Honestly, I don’t know, but I do know how much fun it was and it’s a shame that SEGA seems to have forgotten about it. Imagine also having a phone app that would allow you to take your in-game Chao for a walk like in the Dreamcast days!

THAT’S ALL?

So, what does a new Sonic game need? All those 6 points I mentioned but so much more! I’m really rooting for this new game just like I was for Sonic Forces so, I really hope I don’t get disappointed again… And I really, really, really hope, that the new game isn’t based on the new Sonic The Hedgehog movie.
