As a grown man, I feel that it’s important to keep alive the child inside me. This means that I like to indulge in things I enjoyed as a child, such as purchasing and collecting toys.
Over the years, I have collected many, and today I would like to share with you my top 3 toys to collect as an adult.
They can all be pricey, but I think it depends on how committed you are. Also, don’t worry, they won’t leave you in debt like Pokémon Cards (stop that).
Model Kits
I got my first model kit in 2019, and the only reason my house isn’t filled with them is that I don’t have enough room.
I started with small Gundam Kits, but when I found out about the Digimon Figure Rise Amplified, I may have lost a bit of control. And you can’t blame me because they all look wonderful.
They are also a great option for someone who enjoys Lego since you need to assemble them yourself. Although, there isn’t room for creativity unless you already own a few model kits to mix and match.
These days, I don’t purchase as many model kits, mainly because I like to buy other toys and video games, and these can be expensive. The most I’ve spent was an astonishing €70 on my Machinedramon.
Since I love it, I don’t regret this purchase, but it’s difficult to justify the price since everything is made of plastic.
Still, if you’re a Lego fan, you’ll be more than used to it, and it’s a great toy to collect as an adult.
Digimon Virtual Pets
In my childhood, I had the pleasure of witnessing and participating in plenty of toy crazes—from Yu-Gi-Oh TCG to Beyblade (foreshadowing), and also Tamagotchi.
I loved Tamagotchi, despite not being able to care for one for more than a single day. And when I found out as an adult that there were Digimon Virtual Pets, I was overjoyed.
I bought the 20th Anniversary version in a heartbeat, and during one long summer, I took my Digimon partners everywhere with me until I hatched and raised almost every Digimon available on that device.
I’m not going to lie, I was burned out in the end. That’s why it took me about a year until I got my second Digimon Virtual Pet in 2022. Just a week before my daughter was born, I got a new Digimon Virtual Pet X, and during that week, I could not let it go.
I was completely hooked again. The only thing that made me put it down was the actual birth of my daughter. Taking care of a baby and a virtual pet might be a bit too much!
Beyblade
This is my latest craze, and I’m letting it rip at every opportunity.
It all started with a single and harmless €7 purchase. Then I found that I could order Beyblades from Vinted for a cheap price, so I ordered two more. Then, last week, I got the battle stadium since I saw it on sale when I went shopping.
And afterward, I found I could get the latest and original Beyblades from Takara Tomy straight from AliExpress with no shipping fees and made several more purchases…
As of now, I’m the proud owner of 8 Beyblades, with 2 more on the way. It might not seem like much, but 3 weeks ago, I had 0.
But what makes Beyblade an interesting toy for an adult?
With the release of Beyblade X, they are trying to market it towards a more mature audience as well.
To me, it almost feels like a sport, and the design of the Beyblades and even the new stadium mechanics seem in line with that. These are not the Beyblades you used to play with as a kid—they have more metal and can reach speeds never seen before.
With this said, for the foreseeable future, I’ll continue being a 31-year-old Beyblader.
Toys to Collect as an Adult?
What do you think of this list? Did I convince you to collect any of these? Beyblade is probably the most fun and affordable game right now. But as I said before, it all depends on how committed you are to your collecting!
